What we talk about

  • Dave's work on the Die Another Day surf scene, learning to double tow, and the Molson commercial shot at Jaws
  • How motivation in watersports has moved from respect from your mates to social media views, and how foiling compares with surfing and freestyle
  • What he wants from a board: getting up on foil easily first. He designs boards, not foils
  • How the Gator board happened, tested in secret with a few trusted riders, and small model races that changed his mind about blunt noses
  • Word of mouth is his only marketing, he designs for himself, and he reckons big brands take fewer design risks
  • Beginner advice: pick longer, easier boards. Learning is far easier now, and the level of foiling at Pe'ahi these days
  • Moving from Go Foil to F4, riding the Orca 685 on Maui downwinders, and wanting to try a parawing
  • Hollow boards, a magnet mounted nose weight experiment for higher speeds, and why he prefers plate systems to Tuttle boxes

About this episode

When Gabriella Bella messages you to say that Dave Kalama wants to come on the podcast, you don't quite know what to believe. April fool's?! Cruel joke set up by the X Foils podcast? A messenger from someone Freddie's offended. What neither of us expected was that he was a semi regular listener and was keen for a chinwag. It is fair to say that we both thoroughly enjored the oppurtunity to share a conversation with this watersports legend and think we made the most of it!

We hope you enjoy this one....if you don't, we'd may as well sack it all in!
