What we talk about
- Dane's route from professional sailing to learning on a kite foil and filming foiling
- How he finds work by pairing brands with riders. Projects include Cash's Ireland film, Josh Ku's channel crossing and an F-One Patagonia trip
- How surfing and foiling look different on film, and why he likes wide shots, longer clips and transitions over single big moves
- Mid length films as his favourite format, and inspiration from Patagonia, cycling films and surf films
- Foiling is still wide open for new stories, like unusual waves, backwash and channel crossings, even though it's hard to get into
- What stops people learning downwind: needing steady wind and a car friendly coastline, and years of progression
- Working with different rider personalities, from scripts to interviews, how brands and F-One tell product stories, including the new parawing, and royalty free music
- Hopes to work with the Spencers and Annie Reichman, and slowing down in 2026 after months of travel
About this episode
Videographer extraordinaire, Dane Wilson
We met Dane for the first time last year when we were forced 'last minute' to MC his and Josh Ku's latest video escapades from Bali in Hood River. Turns out he's been involved with a fair few of our favourite foiling footage over the last few years - so we were keen to learn more.
This is what its all about - enthusiasm and enjoyment. Thanks to Dane for taking the time - we look forward to catching up again in real time, now we're better acquainted!
