What we talk about
- Guy's three day downwind along the south coast from Exmouth, with Emma driving the support van. Roughly 400 km
- Why the south coast works for downwinding: a long straight coastline, a westerly wind funnelling past the Isle of Wight, trains back to the start, but plenty of seaweed
- Guy kept the plan loose and told almost nobody until he'd got past Portland, picking the lightest forecast day for the tricky tidal sections
- Rounding Portland Bill on the inner passage, the wind against tide ledge west of Swanage, and Emma's calls to the Coast Guard along the way
- The Isle of Wight and Solent: ferries, shipping lanes, light wind, and why Guy skipped the back of the island
- Days two and three from Bognor Regis to Brighton, Beachy Head, Eastbourne and Dungeness, finishing at Folkestone in strong wind, big swell and a shifting wind direction
- Kit: Armstrong foils including the UHA, a parawing carried as a safety option, spares in the van, and no boat support
- Guy says it was more a mental than physical challenge, and Emma on the one stretch she rode with him
About this episode
We should't need to explain it - you all saw Guy's socials last week just gone - but the man did a big downwind send across the whole of the south coast of the UK. We managed to catch up with he and Emma a week later to see how it all came together - and what a story it is.
This is a really fun, relaxed one - with a great story. Can't wait to do more in person interviews round Liams new house - just hope he doesn't bin the sofa set we were on, as they're so good for this!
Of course we had a couple technical glitches..... apologies!
