What we talk about

  • Daniel Riley of RCTESTFLIGHT on being a builder of things, from aircraft to boats
  • How pump foiling pulled him in, and why he knows less about wing and kite foiling
  • Learning to foil behind his home-built tow boat, Toby, after dock starting got him nowhere
  • Active height control on hydrofoils and why it gets tricky on an eFoil
  • Why people ask about eFoils and tow boats far more than wings and kites
  • Building in water versus air, and the injection moulding headaches on the Flick Wing
  • Flight controllers, PID loops and how the human brain works out foiling by itself
  • Dock start suddenly clicking, skill fade, then how pumping makes thrust and his handheld propeller idea

About this episode

Something a little bit different for you today. Daniel Riley is a full time Youtuber having amassed nearly a million subscribers at the time of recording. His Youtube channel follows his 'builds' and interests, which include almost anything that flies in air or water.

In recent years he has done more and more content around hydrofoiling—dockstarting, building his own TowBoogie (Toby the Tow Boat), making one of the world's largest autopilot efoils with a paddleboard and lawnchair. He is a fascinating character with knowledge and stories to share.

If you're not already, consider subscribing to Daniel's channel RCTESTFLIGHT and following him on his socials. I suspect you'll be glad you did.
